Core 2 Duo: Name and Struggle

Before making further progress in the discussion of core2Duo processor, let us think for a while about the name of the product. Outwardly, it may seem little dreadful. The processors take several names in the process of evolution with the advancement of technology. It is not proper to think that these names must be related. We can take the example of Willamette, a processor based on micro architecture, known as Net burst developed in to Pentium 4.When names are given to them, and certain logic is followed. But our present chip is quite different. Here the micro architecture took the name of core and the chip got the code name conore and the final product is called Core 2 Duo. If we follow the same logic then Willamette would have been known as Willette 4 Quadro; it has not been so.  What the suffix Duo means can be easily understood from single core version of the processor. The single core verso of the processor is known as Core-solo.  The processor Core 2 Duo comes from the corer micro architecture.

Intel Vs AMD
It is technically very difficult to clock the chips higher. In the next step one can go on adding one more core. Theoretically it may sounds nice, but actually it cannot go so. Current programs and systems are designed to use one core. It cannot accommodate multi-core in the processor. Dual core is designed to act like two different places to make the tasks easy. In a single core, the entire tasks were done by the same core. Now, with the double core, programs get divided between the cores. This technology was harnessed by both the giants. But AMD was first to adopt the dual core processor in the computer. Therefore, AMD was little ahead of Intel. From price angle initially, AMD offers more for less which may give AMD more hold in the market than Intel. Now Intel’s dual core processor come at much lower price than AMD. Even the finest model of Intel is cheaper than the lowest model of AMD. Now, it seems Intel is going to win at least on the price front.


Core 2 duo processor is no doubt is a breakthrough in the computer technology. As we have discussed above, it has many features, which can easily entice the buyers to buy the new processor. There are two big Players- Intel and AMD who produce this processor. Now there is a war between Intel and AMD.  The same war was going on between Intel and AMD in the case of single core processor. But toward the end, a stalemate was notices between the two opponents. Intel had higher clock speed, but its processor failed to match the speed of AMD, which had lower clock speed. The two archrivals has different specialty. AMD specializes with the gaming technology. Using lower clocked chips it gives better performance. Intel tops in the general sector. In performing official works Intel has no match.

The most important is the pefrformance. You may opt for either Intel’s model or AMD’s model. But as a buyer you must be cautious enough. You should watch thing most carefully, you must compare the price, the level of performance correctly.
